A return to Britannia Test House after more than 50 years.
David Bruce first visited Britannia Test House while working in Teesside’s steel industry in the 1970s. More than five decades later, he returned with his grandson to see how the facility has changed.
Some places hold more than machinery. They hold decades of engineering history, the people who worked there and the industries they helped support.
This week we had the pleasure of welcoming David Bruce back to Britannia Test House, a facility he regularly visited during the 1970s while working within Teesside’s steel industry.
More than 50 years later, David returned to the Test House, this time accompanied by his grandson, giving us the opportunity to show them both how the facility has evolved while retaining its important place within the region’s engineering story.
More than five decades of change.
When David first visited Britannia Test House, Teesside was at the heart of one of the country’s great industrial regions, with steelmaking, heavy engineering and manufacturing forming an important part of everyday working life across the area.
Britannia Test House was already part of that industrial landscape, providing the facilities needed to test equipment and support engineering operations across the region.
Today, the facility continues that work as part of Durham Lifting, supporting customers with proof load testing and lifting solutions across a wide range of industries.
The equipment, technology and capabilities have developed significantly over the years, but the purpose behind the facility remains familiar: providing the testing expertise and engineering support required for safety-critical lifting equipment.
Capturing the past and present.
David’s grandson is currently completing a college photography project exploring how traditional industrial sites have changed over time.
Britannia Test House provided a particularly fitting location for the project, combining a building with a long industrial history with the modern equipment and testing capabilities that allow it to continue operating today.
His visit captured that contrast between the heritage of the building and the ongoing engineering activity taking place within it.
A story that continues to be written.
For us, occasions like this are an important reminder that Britannia Test House is more than simply a testing facility.
Generations of engineers, steelworkers and lifting professionals have passed through the building over the decades, each forming part of its history.
Today, our team continues that story through proof load testing, engineering and lifting operations carried out for customers across a broad range of industries.
It was a pleasure to welcome David and his grandson back to Britannia Test House, to hear his memories of visiting the facility more than five decades ago and to share how the site continues to move forward.
Testing built on engineering experience.
From proof load testing and destructive testing to specialist lifting and engineering support, Britannia Test House provides the facilities and expertise required for safety-critical testing.
