Bespoke load testing for complex engineering requirements
Durham Lifting provides bespoke load testing and specialist testing support for projects that cannot be covered by a standard test arrangement. From on-site load testing and quayside bollard testing to shear, bending, third-party witness testing and pre or post test MPI, our team can develop the test method around the item, site conditions and required outcome.
Testing solutions for non-standard loads, sites and test arrangements
When a conventional proof load, tensile, compression or destructive test does not suit the item or installation, the test arrangement can be developed around the actual project. That may mean mobilising to site, creating a bespoke reaction arrangement, changing the load direction or adding inspection and witness requirements.

Frequently asked questions
Common questions about bespoke load testing, on-site testing, bollard testing, witness requirements, MPI and non-standard engineered test arrangements.
What is bespoke load testing?
Bespoke load testing is used where a standard test method or test arrangement does not fully suit the item, installation or required load condition. The setup can be developed around the geometry, load path, site constraints, connection method and evidence required from the test.
Can testing be carried out on site?
Yes. Durham Lifting supports on-site load testing where equipment, structures or installed systems cannot easily be transported to Britannia Test House or where testing in the installed condition is more appropriate.
What is quayside bollard testing?
Quayside bollard testing applies a controlled load to harbour or mooring bollards so their response can be assessed against the project test requirement. The loading arrangement depends on the bollard, berth layout, available reaction points and site conditions.
Can bespoke test arrangements be designed?
Yes. Non-standard tests may require custom supports, fixtures, hydraulic load application or reaction arrangements developed specifically around the item and its load path.
Do you provide witness testing?
Yes. Tests can be arranged with clients, surveyors, insurers or independent third-party representatives in attendance where witnessing is required by the project.
What are shear and bending tests?
Shear and bending tests are specialist testing methods used to assess how a component or structure behaves under specific loading conditions other than standard tension or compression.
Can MPI inspection be carried out before or after testing?
Yes. Pre and post test magnetic particle inspection can be included where the test plan calls for surface condition checks before and after load application.
When should I use the main load testing services rather than specialist testing?
If your requirement is a conventional proof load, tensile, compression or destructive test, our Load Testing Services page explains the dedicated testing routes. Specialist testing is intended for non-standard arrangements, unusual load paths, site-based testing or projects requiring additional engineered support.
Can a specialist test combine load testing, witnessing and inspection?
Yes. Where the project requires it, the testing plan can include the load test itself together with third-party witnessing and pre or post test MPI support.
What information is required for a specialist testing enquiry?
Useful information includes drawings, dimensions, photographs, the required test load, connection details, site constraints, available reaction points and any witnessing, inspection, reporting or certification requirements.
