Overhead cranes, bridge cranes & travelling crane systems
Durham Lifting supplies and installs overhead crane systems for workshops, production bays, fabrication facilities and industrial sites across the UK, including single girder, double girder and underslung crane systems.
Choosing the right overhead crane system.
The best overhead crane arrangement depends on the lifting capacity, span, hook height, building structure and how frequently the crane will be used.
Single Girder Overhead Cranes
Cost-effective crane systems for general lifting duties, moderate capacities and efficient material handling across defined working areas.
Double Girder Overhead Cranes
Suited to higher capacities, longer spans and applications where improved hook height or heavy-duty performance is required.
Underslung Overhead Cranes
Suspended overhead crane systems for facilities where the crane runs below the supporting structure or where headroom needs to be carefully managed.
Every overhead crane starts with the working environment.
An overhead crane is only effective when it is correctly specified around the building, the load path, available headroom and how the equipment will be used day to day.
Durham Lifting can help assess your lifting requirement and advise whether a single girder, double girder, underslung or alternative crane arrangement is the most suitable route.
From requirement to installation.
Durham Lifting supports overhead crane projects from initial enquiry through to supply, installation and ongoing service support.
Review
We review the lifting requirement, working area, capacity, span and site restrictions.
Specify
The crane type, hoist, controls and support arrangement are specified around the application.
Install
Crane systems are supplied and installed by experienced engineers.
Support
Ongoing servicing, LOLER inspection support and upgrades can be provided after installation.
Other crane systems you may need.
Workstation Crane Systems
Lightweight crane systems for production cells, smaller work areas and local lifting applications.
View System →Gantry Cranes
Freestanding gantry crane systems for areas where building-mounted runways are not practical.
View System →Jib Cranes
Wall-mounted and pillar-mounted jib cranes for workstations, loading areas and local lifting points.

What is an overhead crane?
An overhead crane is a crane system that travels along elevated runway beams, allowing a hoist and trolley to move loads across a defined working area.
What is the difference between an overhead crane and a gantry crane?
An overhead crane is usually supported by the building structure or a fixed runway system. A gantry crane uses its own supporting legs and is often used where building support is not practical.
What is the difference between single girder and double girder overhead cranes?
A single girder crane uses one main bridge beam and is commonly used for general lifting. A double girder crane uses two bridge beams and is typically selected for higher capacities, longer spans or improved hook height.
Can Durham Lifting install overhead cranes?
Yes. Durham Lifting can support overhead crane supply and installation, along with ongoing servicing, maintenance and inspection support.
Do overhead cranes need LOLER inspection?
Yes. Overhead cranes are lifting equipment and must be inspected and maintained in line with LOLER and PUWER requirements.
