Gantry cranes designed, manufactured and installed for UK industry
Durham Lifting designs, manufactures, supplies and installs gantry crane systems for workshops, production areas, fabrication facilities, storage yards and industrial sites where a freestanding lifting solution is required.
Choose the right gantry crane for the way your site works
Gantry cranes are useful where building-mounted crane runways are not practical, where outdoor lifting is required, or where a dedicated lifting area needs to operate independently of the building structure.
Full gantry cranes
Supported on legs at both sides, full gantry systems create a self-supporting lifting area for workshops, industrial facilities and yards where existing building steelwork is unsuitable for a crane runway.
Semi-gantry cranes
A semi-gantry uses floor-running support on one side and an elevated runway on the other. It can make efficient use of an existing structure while reducing the amount of freestanding support required.
Goliath cranes
Goliath crane systems suit larger lifting areas and demanding industrial applications including fabrication, steel handling, plant movement and outdoor material handling.
Not sure which system you need? Send us the load, span, height of lift and working area and we can help identify the most suitable crane arrangement.
Discuss your requirement →A gantry crane is engineered around the lifting area, not selected from a catalogue
The right system depends on how the load needs to move, the available space, required safe working load, span, hook height, operating environment and the structure or floor available to support the crane.
Durham Lifting can review these requirements and specify a full gantry, semi-gantry, goliath crane or alternative crane system around the application.
From requirement review to installation and long-term support
Durham Lifting supports crane systems throughout their working life, giving customers one route from the initial lifting requirement through to installation, commissioning, servicing and statutory examination support.
Understand the lift
We review the load, working area, span, height, environment and site restrictions.
Design & manufacture
The gantry arrangement, hoist, controls and support structure are specified around the application.
Install & commission
The crane system is supplied, installed and commissioned for the intended working environment.
Maintain & examine
Planned servicing, repairs, upgrades and LOLER examination support can continue after installation.
Gantry crane systems for workshops, yards and demanding lifting areas
The layout can be adapted to suit different industrial environments where loads need reliable coverage without relying entirely on the building structure.
Workshops
Dedicated lifting coverage for maintenance, assembly and general workshop handling.
Fabrication
Handling fabricated components and assemblies through defined production or build areas.
Outdoor yards
Freestanding and goliath arrangements for outdoor lifting and material movement.
Heavy engineering
Engineered crane systems for larger components, plant and demanding industrial handling tasks.
More than a gantry crane supplier
Durham Lifting combines crane system design, manufacture, installation and ongoing engineering support, helping customers manage the complete lifecycle of their lifting equipment.

Questions customers ask before specifying a gantry crane
What is a gantry crane?
A gantry crane is a crane system where the bridge is supported by legs rather than relying entirely on a building-mounted runway. Depending on the design, the legs may run on rails or form part of a fixed freestanding support arrangement.
What is the difference between a gantry crane and an overhead crane?
An overhead crane normally runs on elevated runway beams supported by the building or a dedicated runway structure. A gantry crane uses supporting legs, making it useful where building support is impractical or where outdoor or freestanding lifting coverage is required.
What is a semi-gantry crane?
A semi-gantry crane combines one floor-running support with one elevated runway. It can be a practical option where part of the site can support an elevated runway but a fully building-supported overhead crane is not the right solution.
Can gantry cranes be used outdoors?
Yes. Gantry and goliath crane systems can be specified for outdoor yards and industrial handling areas, subject to the operating environment, loading requirements, support arrangement and other site conditions.
Does Durham Lifting manufacture gantry cranes?
Durham Lifting designs, manufactures, supplies and installs crane systems, including gantry and goliath crane arrangements, and can continue to support the equipment with servicing, repairs, inspections and upgrades.
Do gantry cranes require LOLER thorough examination?
Gantry cranes used as lifting equipment at work are subject to LOLER thorough examination requirements. The examination interval should follow the applicable statutory interval or a written examination scheme, with additional inspection requirements determined by the equipment, operating conditions and risk assessment. PUWER duties also apply to work equipment.
